Cartography
Cartography – the profession of making maps has re-established itself as an essential illustrative art form. The representation of depicting measureable geographical information has a multitude of uses and technology continues to drive improvements to the way we present and read maps.
Historically, maps were beautifully illustrated art pieces for display as well as information and would hang on large walls or galleries. The level of detail and intricacy that was achieved by hand rendering is mind-blowing. Much of our history and how today’s world evolved is illustrated through maps. It is no different today except the information is now stored on databases and easily accessible via computer software applications; GPS; and mobile phone technology. Interactive and dynamic content certainly helps in delayering sometimes quite complex maps.
Urban Graphics work hard at portraying geographic spatial information through traditional cartographic methods, however the way we present and access this information is contemporary. This enables us to concentrate on transferring core information, data and analysis without being overridden by the technology.
