Garden CitiesThe garden city movement is progressing again! It is high on the Governments agenda as the solution to the UK housing crisis and forms an important part of our contemporary debate.

The Garden City ideal is perhaps the most radical and relevant legacy of British town planning. Initiated in 1898 by Sir Ebenezer Howard, it established methods for the design, delivery and stewardship of new ‘holistically’ planned and self-contained settlements. Under the 21st Century ‘garden city initiative’, a series of new communities with green spaces, sustainable transport and spacious homes will be built in the UK. By 2020, more than 25,000 housing starts are expected in garden villages, towns and cities supported by the government.

Designing and communicating the ‘new garden city-inspired’ communities at a range of scales is complex and requires the right set of visual aids, graphic styles and techniques to successfully share the long term vision for major development. Key elements include:

  • Engagement and Ownership – effective and tailored engagement with stakeholders, authorities and communities to establish the vision, planning and management of the new community;
  • Setting out the long term ‘Vision’ – capture and develop aspiration and ideas into a shared vision of the future; and
  • Strategic masterplans and phasing – visual aids to strategic plans to illustrate development over a significant period of time.
